6th Annual ISLAND Benefit Concert
"My beard would like to express it's humble gratitude to you all for allowing it to live a life of purpose; and as its last act it would like to pay tribute to Phil Wintermute." - Seth Bernard
The bearded and unbearded alike descended on Short's Brewing Company to celebrate great music, great food, great beer and a great cause at the ISLAND 6th annual Benefit Boncert and Silent Auction on April 7th.
This was the year of the shave-raiser, a new fundraising idea conceived by bearded farmer DJ Marty Heller (DJ Martoosh). Bearded men competed to raise money, with the winner getting a free shave, live on stage. The winner? Mr. Seth Bernard. Seth rapped over DJ Martoosh's remix of Phil Wintermute's BioDome, "we're seeing through the prism of consumerism/it aint good for you/it aint good for me/ it aint flush with the dream of baby boomerism… when we're livin` in the bio-dome." Upon the tribute's completion, Seth underwent the great ritual of moving his facial hair from the art music web to the soil food web, courtesy of barber and MLUI staffer Brian Beauchamp.
But that aint all folks. The benefit featured more than seven hours of music, from Seth and May, Rachael Davis, Dominic John Davis, Joshua Davis, Gift or Creatures and the True Falsettos - all Earthwork musicians - as well as local blues act Hipps N Ricco.
The benefit raised over $6000 for ISLAND, essential dollars for a community organization with a micro-budget. The dollars form the primary support for ISLAND's Hill House Residency Program, which supports emerging musicians, writers at all stages of their career, and non-studio artists with time and space to create new work. Any leftover funds will support ISLAND's food, farm and ecology programming, including 100+ events in 2012.
Brad and Amanda cannot overstate the importance of the support that Earthwork Musicians have provided ISLAND during it's early years. "These kinds of relationships go way beyond financial support or trading favors." said Brad Kik, ISLAND co-director. "Our connection with Earthwork Music is humbling. These musicians aren't just here because of their generosity. There's a whole mess of love, shared work, old friendships, overlapping mission and good whiskey involved here." Earthwork musicians have played at every ISLAND benefit and have raised over $25,000 for ISLAND programs over the last seven years.

Reasons For Audits
The IRS computer system determines most of the audits. It compares the details on the tax return that you file with the details it already has from the W-2 and 1099 form. These numbers need to match. If not, you will probably receive an IRS notice for audit. This commences the correspondence audit.
Factors including low or no business profit, low gross profit margin, high travel and entertainment deductions, high use of cars in the business, and high car expenses are also looked into by the computer system. The elements might mark you for an audit.

IRS New Withholding Tables Now Available
The new tables incorporate the new Making Work Pay credit, one of the key tax provisions included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that became law earlier this week.
“For most taxpayers, the additional credit will automatically start showing up in their paychecks this spring,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “Since employers and payroll companies will handle this change, people typically won’t need to take any additional action. The IRS will continue working to implement this and other provisions of the new law as quickly as possible........

NEW THIS MORNING
| WINNERS AND LOSERS: This week the political was also personal, as President Obama came out in support of gay marriage, citing the New York State Senate's marriage vote as an influence. Who says Albany legislators don't have any clout! But brief moments of self-congratulation were overtaken by the grim realities of the stump, and so by Thursday we were back to parsing the polls, pundits and policy that leave some winners and others the inevitable losers: http://bit.ly/IW56WR

Zug Island
Zug Island is a heavily industrialized island in the city of River Rouge near the southern city limits of Detroit in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located where the mouth of the Rouge River spills into the Detroit River. Zug Island is not a natural island in the river; it was formed when a shipping canal was dug along the southwestern side of the island, allowing ships to bypass several hundred yards of twisting waterway near the mouth of the natural course of the lowest portions of the River Rouge.

The Uniroyal Tire

The Uniroyal® Giant Tire was originally created as a Ferris wheel attraction at the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair. The wheel held 96 fairgoers and was powered by a 100-horsepower motor. More than two million people rode the Giant Tire Ferris wheel during the fair, including Jacqueline Kennedy and her children, John Jr. and Caroline.
After the 1965 World's Fair festivities ended, the Giant Tire was relocated to a Uniroyal Tire sales office in Allen Park, Michigan, and has towered alongside I-94 near the Metro Airport ever since. Over the decades it has become an important symbol of Uniroyal's 117-year heritage and a cultural icon for the city of Detroit known the world over.

The new owners demolished the facilities in the summer of 1999 to make way for commercial development.

This guy had a price on his head by art galleries and police alike.Turns out he is Ronald Scherz of Warren Michigan. He says he is no longer the Turdl.
